Nurse Practitioner to bring late-breaking diabetes news to north shore

COVINGTON, LOUISIANA – Pamela Egan recently attended the 63rd Scientific Session of the American Diabetes Association at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and Hilton New Orleans Riverside from June 13-17.

Thousands of health care professionals involved in diabetes research and/or the delivery of diabetes care joined their colleagues in New Orleans from all over the world.

Physicians, researchers, nurses, dietitians, diabetes educators and other healthcare professional benefited from the comprehensive programming and stimulating atmosphere.

Oral Abstracts and state of the art lectures were presented by internationally renowned researchers. Health care professionals and representatives from more than 200 companies in the health care industry were part of the grand exhibit hall, demonstrating the latest technology and new medications in the treatment of diabetes.

According to Egan, diabetes is an epidemic in our community and a complex disorder to treat.

Statistics show that 291,273 people in the state of Louisiana have diabetes. Diabetes costs Louisiana more than $2.5 billion annually.

In the New Orleans area alone, the death rate from diabetes is nearly double the national average.

“I consider it an honor to be involved with the American Diabetes Association,” Egan said.

As one of the nation’s leading voluntary health organizations, they provide millions of dollars in research for a cure, and support for 17 million children and adults affected by all types of diabetes and the medical professionals that care for them.

“Diabetes is a complex disease and we as clinicians must stay abreast of the latest medications and treatments for this disorder,” she said.

Pamela Egan, Nurse Practitioner and Certified Diabetes Educator, will present some of the late-breaking clinical studies to the community July 5 at 1 p.m.

The meeting will be held at Egan Diabetes Center, which is certified by the ADA. The center is located at 1116 West 21st Ave. in Covington. Call (985) 893-7466 to reserve a place.
